THE terrifying incident began with a loud shriek like that made by an owl. But when Funani Mkhize (33) looked out of her window in the early hours of Sunday morning, what she saw was not an owl but a naked young man.
Funani, from Umbumbulu, south of Durban said the man first tried to escape but fell into a hole in her yard.
The shocked family then demanded he tell them what he was doing.
“He said his uncle, a local induna, had turned him into a zombie.
“He pretends to be normal by day but by night his uncle sends him to perform evil acts,” said Funani.
She said the man told them that there are many other zombies in the area.
One resident said people there had been dying from strange illnesses.
Some believe the man’s uncle is up to no good.
“There’ve been rumours that the induna is performing evil deeds. Now that his own nephew has told us we believe the rumours,” a resident said.
The man’s family was called. Only the uncle didn’t come, claiming he was sick.
Together with the cops, the man and his family were taken for their own safety to the local inkosi, Thamsanqa Mkhize. He said: “I condemn those practices but angry residents can’t just kill my people.
“They must report all incidents of this nature to myself and the cops.”
The man’s family couldn’t be reached for comment.
Major Thulani Zwane said no case was opened.
“We went to the scene and took the suspect to inkosi Mkhize,” he said.
