Former Chelsea pointsman, Didier Drogba fined for refusing to sit on the bench at his club. Drogba who now plays for French club side, Montreal Impact has been fined.


The Ivorian striker had refused a place on the bench after being dropped from the starting XI.

Club President, Joey Saputo disclosed on Tuesday that Drogba would not be suspended for the tantrum he threw.

Rather, he mentioned that the striker would pay a small fine.

Saputo said:
“I’m happy to announce the situation has been resolved.

“Didier Drogba will not be suspended for refusing to accept a place on the substitutes’ bench.”

Montreal coach Mauro Biello said Drogba refused to play rather than accept a role from the bench before Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Toronto FC.

Perhaps angered by the fact that he was not listed in Biello’s matchday line-up.

Saputo confirmed that he called a meeting with Drogba and Biello after the match to clear the air. and said it was all behind them.

He also did say that the incident was all behind them.

Saputo announced that:

“I’m happy to announce that the situation has been resolved to the club’s satisfaction.

“Didier has accepted to assume the role that the coach sees fit as well contributing to the success of this club.”

Under terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, Drogba will be sanctioned for missing a team activity without permission.

The club, however, has chosen not to suspend him for Sunday’s final regular-season game against the New England Revolution.

The club’s president revealed that he will be fined as per the league rules, but that there was no reason for a suspension.

Saputo, a wealthy businessman who owns Canadian dairy firm bearing same name, admitted that Drogba’s outburst had not been helpful.

Drogba’s contract expires at the end of the season. He has 10 goals in 22 games this term.
