THE man and his friend sat drinking as they usually did but one of them was hiding a terrible secret in his backyard. The 35-year-old man had been looking unhappy for a while.
After a few beers, he allegedly confessed to killing his girlfriend and burying her body in a shallow grave!
The shocked friend got as much information as he could and went straight to the cops.
On Monday afternoon, police visited the house in Bhekela kasi in Ugie, near Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape.
They went straight to the backyard and asked the owner to remove containers placed on top of a dirt patch and start digging.
A witness told Daily Sun: “He started digging and a hand appeared. When I asked him who it belonged to, he said it was his girlfriend’s and he had killed her late last month.
“He was told to dig more and eventually pulled out the woman’s body. She was still wearing jeans and a T-shirt.”
The woman, believed to be 32 years old, was a resident of a nearby village. The boyfriend first told cops she had fallen and died. He allegedly changed his story later and said he had strangled her after a fight.
“Some neighbours said the discovery made sense because there had been flies and a bad smell. The suspect had also been acting strangely,” said the witness.
After the night of the drunken confession, the suspect’s friend allegedly visited again and tried to walk around the yard but was not allowed to.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Vuyani Mapolisa confirmed that the suspect was arrested on Monday evening. He said the man would appear in the Ugie Magistrates Court today on a charge of murder.
