A charity fundraiser who turned her life around after getting involved in drugs hanged herself after struggling to cope with ‘three of the most stressful things in life’ – ending a relationship, starting a new job and moving house.

Shirley Jensen, hailed as an ‘inspirational leader’ by colleagues, overcame drug addiction to be awarded a first class honours degree and embark on a successful career, first in an auction house and then at a property firm, an inquest heard.

But the 41-year-old took her own life after finding herself unable to cope with splitting from her boyfriend, changing jobs and moving into a flat.

‘Three of the most stressful things that can happen to a person have happened to me at the same time – I’ve ended a relationship, started a new job and moved house,’ she told her mother.

Police broke into Ms Jensen’s home in Stockport, Greater Manchester, after she failed to turn up for work, and found a body and a note reading ‘I’m sorry’. A self-help book entitled ‘Letting Go’ was found next to her.

Ms Jensen, formerly of Aberdeen, was jailed in 1992 for six months for possession of Class A drugs. But after going teetotal at the age of 20, she got her life back on track and helped others get over their own dependence on drugs and alcohol.

‘She attended Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous and helped other women to get over their experience of drugs and alcohol,’ said Ms Jensen’s mother, Winifred Barber, 63.

Ms Jensen had suffered from depression in the past but was always reluctant to take anti-depressants, her GP said.

Mrs Barber said: ‘She was a very loving and beautiful young woman. I have great faith and a belief that I will meet her again one day and she will reveal all.’

The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide.
