King of Sungura music, Alick Macheso, says his heart bleeds for his mentors who have failed to rise to the occasion despite nurturing the best talents on the local scene.

The Orchestra Mberikwazvo band leader said he feels sorry for his mentors Shepherd Chinyani and Nicholas Zakaria whom he described as ‘mere bridges’. “I was staying in Dzivarasekwa 2 sometime in 1983 when I first came to Harare. That was when I also came to know Shepherd Chinyani. He was the one who nurtured my talent and he was the one who made me play the bass guitar,” he said

Macheso added: “I was just whiling up time strumming a guitar at a certain house where I was staying along Chinokoro Street in Dzivarasekwa 2. Chinyani stayed some few houses away in the same neighborhood. I remember on that day, he (Chinyani) was just passing by when he heard me playing the guitar. I was with a band called Sea Side by then. He then came into the yard and told me that he had been attracted by the way I was playing the guitar. Chinyani asked me to come to his house to try my hand with his band. It was not easy at his band since he already had a rhythm guitarist in his band. I was playing the rhythm guitar by then. There was an opening for a bass guitarist at his band and Chinyani said in should try playing the bass guitar. I was very hesitant at first but Chinyani insisted that I try the bass guitar. I then took the bass guitar and that is how I became a bassist”.

Macheso said what hurt him most is that Chinyani has never grown musically and has remained the same man he saw decades ago. Baba Shero, as Macheso is fondly known by a legion of his fans, equated Chinyani to a bridge or a school teacher who produces a lot of professionals but dies a knowledge giver.

I once bumped into him some few months back and what I saw in him was that same Chinyani I met so many years ago. His music has never grown and he has never achieved that much in the industry despite having nurtured so much talent in this country. You can not talk of music without mentioning his name. He is like my other mentor Mudhara Madzibaba (Nicholas Zakaria). Madzibaba is the same man that he was decades ago when I used to work with him. His music has never scaled heights and it has never gone down. It remained the same over the years. I don’t know where the problem lies bit my heart bleeds for these men. They are like bridges or teachers who teach pilots who fly over them whilst they remain in class. They are only there to give passage to others to achieve in life”.

Macheso said although he has not done much to help his two mentors, he gave Chinyani some instruments.

“I don’t believe that people should expect to get some favors in the future for assisting other people. I have helped other people and I don’t expect to earn some returns from them. In Chitungwiza before I moved to Waterfalls, some people used to call my place paWelfare. I didn’t mind but I would just help those in need with little things that I could afford. When I met Chinyani I gave him a drum kit and some speakers- very big speakers. I gave him the whole set. They were second-hand but the kit was as good as a new,” he said.
