A MARONDERA man was last week sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was convicted of raping his four year old cousin early this year.
Admire Chikonore, 19, of Chipesa B Farm in Marondera, on January 21 this year raped the four year old girl in his hut.
Prosecutor Rumbidzai Katsande said the girl was sent by her mother to collect matchsticks from Chikonore.
On arrival she found Chikonore cultivating the fields.
Chikomore then carried the girl into his hut and raped her once before instructing her to go and tell the mother that he had no matchsticks.
On arrival, the mother queried why she had taken long.
The girl then informed the mother what had transpired and a report was made to the police leading to the arrest of Chikonore.
Regional magistrate, Clever Tsikwa, said Chikonore was a brother to the girl and instead of protecting her, he had betrayed her and the rape was going to traumatise his victim for the rest of her life.
Tsikwa said people like Chikonore had to be removed from the society and they deserved lengthy custodial sentences and at the same time sending a strong message to would be offenders.
