A Chinese beekeeper has gone to extreme lengths to try and sell more of his honey. He covered his semi-naked body in more than 460,000 bees with only a plastic bag on his head.

She Ping, a honey merchant from the southwestern city of Chongqing, covered himself in the insects, which collectively weighed more than 45kg (100Ibs) using a technique known as “bee bearding”.

This generally involves attracting the bees by placing a queen bee in a small cage hanging from the participant’s body.

The 34-year-old man put on the display for a group of French photographers.

Pictures of his stunt showed Mr She posing topless next to more than a dozen blue hives, before the bees swarmed over his body.

He was stung more than 20 times during the 40-minute stunt.

“To be honest I felt very nervous, but I do it to promote my honey,” Mr She told the AFP news agency, adding: “I’m used to dealing with bees … and started these activities when I was about 22.”

“It hurt but I didn’t dare to move,” he added.

“The main preparation is avoiding taking a shower, especially avoiding using soap because it can excite the bees.”

China is one of the world’s major producers of honey, though its exports have been banned in several countries due to counterfeiting fears.

Mr She admitted his attempt fell short of a world record, but claims the record for doing it without any clothes.

“Of the people who do it naked, I’m probably the most awesome,” he said.

Indian Vipin Seth holds the world record for wearing a mantle of bees weighing 61.4 kg (134Ibs), according to the Guinness World Records’ official video channel.
