Representatives of urban commuter omnibus operators are concerned that the phasing out of kombis will lead to massive job losses and chaos within the transport sector. The Harare Private Commuter Omnibus Operators’ Association said Government should reconsider its position.“Government’s role should be to create an environment conducive for job-creation,” said Mr Blessing Nyika, the chairperson of the association.

“The ban on kombis will result in thousands losing their jobs. Rather, Government should focus on helping reorganise the sector to deal with the chaos there.

“Operators have shown that they can work hand-in-hand with Government-owned operators like Zupco. Therefore, I do not see the need to ban kombis in order to promote other players.”

Urban Commuter Operators’ Association secretary Mr Davison Chihwayi said, “Government should not make hasty decisions that will prove problematic in the long run.

“If they are to ban kombis then we should be given the first option to pool resources and buy the bigger buses.”
