Talented presenter Zororo Makamba has become the first person in Zimbabwe to die after contracting the coronavirus. He is the son of businessman and Telecel boss James Makamba.

Initially, the Ministry of Health and Child Care confirmed the death of a patient at Wilkins Hospital without naming who it was. The Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo has since confirmed it was Zororo.

Permanent Secretary Dr Agnes Mahomva issued a statement saying; “It’s a very sad day for us.”

Makamba was the second person to test positive for coronavirus in the country after travelling to the US and was in isolation at Wilkins Hospital in Harare.

So far three people have tested positive for the virus, although there is growing suspicion the government is suppressing the true number of people affected.

Meanwhile BancABC CEO Lance Mambondiani has issued a statement on their employees who interacted with Makamba at their Mt Pleasant campus on Tuesday (17 March);

“Out of the abundance of caution, all employees who interacted with the patient and their contact persons were immediately identified for further management.

“Whilst none of the affected employees have shown any symptoms, preventative measures which include a 14 Day Self-Quarantine, as per health officials guidelines, have been activated.”

Below are the reactions so far:

@AdamTheofilatos: “I am told first hand that the Hospitals are nowhere near able to deal with Coronavirus. Zororo Makamba was left for hours with no help from doctors or nurses who had NO protective clothing. A ventilator was brought to the hospital and no one knew how to use it.”

Mutumwa Mawere: “Mr Zororo Makamba, the son of Mr James Makamba has passed on. MHSRIEP. I have just learned of this tragic loss of life due to the virus. A giant with so much potential has fallen. Corona is real. Let us pause and reflect. Life is too precious.”

Jah Prayzah: “R.I.P Zororo Makamba. You will be missed my brother. My sincere condolence to his family and the entire nation which has been robbed. To the rest of us, let’s try as much as we can to isolate and sanitize. Corona is real, play your part the rest we leave to God.”

Lloyd Msipa: “The sad passing of @ZororoMakamba tells us you can’t trust Zim data. If they have had two cases & one has passed, it implies a case fatality rate of 50% which makes Zim stats totally inaccurate & unrepresentative of any reality The real issue is 1000s are undetected.”

Gladys Hlatywayo: “12 hrs ago, ZBC told us there was recovery! Such propaganda in the face of adversity is a huge disappointment. Rest in Peace Zororo Makamba.”

Team Pachedu: “R.I.P. Zororo Makamba. Please Mr. Mnangagwa, do the right thing before it’s too late and suspend all flights, close the border, ban all gatherings and, inter alia, initiate massive education campaigns as prescribed under Section 29.3 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.”
