New Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday announced that elections would be held next year as scheduled, and outlined a broad vision for restoring economic and financial stability for the southern African country.
Mnangagwa made the pledge in his inaugural speech after being sworn in to take over from long-serving leader Robert Mugabe who resigned on Tuesday after a military take-over.Thousands had gathered at the Harare National Stadium to witness the swearing in of the 75-year-old former vice president who was unexpectedly sacked by Mugabe on November 6.

“The people have spoken. The voice of the people is the voice of God,” he said.
The new president also said he was ready to re-engage with the outside as well as look into the land issues that have dogged the country for years.
“My government is committed to compensate those farmers from whom land was taken, in terms of the laws of the land,”
Mnangagwa now faces an uphill task of restoring Zimbabwe’s economy and democracy which many analysts say suffered under the 37-year-rule of Robert Mugabe.
It is however unclear if Mnangagwa will include the opposition while forming his government before next year’s poll.
