I spent a good part of last week asking people who were planning to attend the Watora Mari concert, featuring Diamond Platnumz and Jah Prayzah, what I thought were two simple questions for a free ticket to the show. These were the questions I asked:
“What is Diamond Platnumz’s real name?” and “How old is he?”Believe it or not, out of the 27 people interviewed, none of them got the answers right. Some said he was 36.
Others thought he was 30, but nobody thought that he was below 30. As for his real name, apart from one person who gave me the name Abdul, nobody knew the correct answer. My assumption was that people would have researched on Diamond Platnumz’s story before parting with their good money.
On being asked why they were going to the concert, the generic response from most of them was. “We are just curious to see if this guy will outstage Jah Prayzah. We know it will be a good concert because we know that Jah Prayzah is a good performer. We also understand they are bringing the girl who features on the Watora Mari video. We know she is a smasher. We want to see her too.”
But who is Diamond Platnumz?
His real name is Naseeb Abdul Juma. He was born in Tanzania on October 2 1989 (that makes him 27 years old and slightly younger than Jah Prayzah). Although he is only 27, he has achieved a lot in his life. He is best known for his hit song Number One. Diamond has won numerous awards at Channel O and the HiPipo Music Awards. He performed at the Big Brother Africa 7 eviction show in May 2012. Diamond is considered influential among his fans, and is said to be the most loved and decorated Tanzanian artist at the moment. He is believed to be the highest selling Tanzanian artist of ringtones by mobile phone companies, as well as being among the artists earning the highest income in the Great Lakes region’s music industry. Diamond is a Muslim. In 2010, he endorsed Tanzania’s dominant ruling party, the Chama Cha Mapinduza (CCM) and its presidential candidate, Jakaya Kikwete. He also recorded a remix of his single Mbagala, titled Chama Cha Mapinduza Tusonge Mbele (CCM Let’s Move Forward)

He is married to Zarina Hassan (aka Zarithe Boss Lady), a Ugandan lady who, at 36, is nine years older than him.
On August 6 2015, Diamond announced through Instagram that he and his wife welcomed their first child (baby girl) whom they named Lattiffah.
Diamond’s fans started to spread rumours that Zarinah was just a gold digger and that Lattiffah was not his child.
They claimed that Lattiffah was sired by Zarina’s ex-boyfriend. Even Diamond’s mother had her doubts about the paternity of the child.
Diamond bowed to pressure from his fans and critics who were constantly bugging him to prove that he was the baby’s biological father. In a bid to silence the rumours that he did not sire Tiffa, the singer travelled to South Africa with his family to have a DNA test done before he left for a performance in Las Vegas, United States.
DNA results from South Africa confirmed Diamond Platnumz as the biological father of Latiffah.
Diamond broke into a tearful fit when the results of the DNA test done on him, his wife and baby Tifa were released. It turned out that Diamond had the bragging rights as Tifa’s biological father.
After the results were released, Diamond went public and announced: “Tifah is my daughter, completely! I am extremely overjoyed by the results [DNA]. That’s why I am now freer and happier. I’m having a good time! I am not worried at all. I can now courageously face my critics”.
All that fuss by both his fans and critics came to naught.
An elated Diamond spoke of his love for Lattiffah and how photos of the young princess covered the walls of his office. The results had just given him the right ammunition to deal with his critics.
His daughter, Princess Latifa, is one of the most famous babies of African celebrities. In less than one year, she has a following of 416 000 fans on Instagram.
Early this year, Diamond Platnumz collaborated with Zimbabwe’s award-winning musician, Jah Prayzah on the track, Watora Mari which they recorded in Tanzania. This track was released on Jah Prayzah’s Mudhara Vachauya album. The track, together with a smashing video done by the two artists in Monaco, was shown to Zimbabweans on August 12, the same day the Mudhara Vachauya album was launched at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). The track Watora Mari was well-received by Zimbabweans. It is the result of this collaboration that brought the two artists to perform together at the HICC on Friday.
Now we all know who Diamond Platnumz is. We also know how old he is. My two questions can be answered correctly now.
