Former Zanu-PF Mashonaland East provincial chair and incumbent Marondera Central National Assembly representative Ray Kaukonde faces the boot from Parliament following moves by his home province to have him expelled from the party.

According to the Constitution of Zimbabwe Section 129, an MP’s seat is vacant if the member has ceased to belong to the political party of which he or she was a member when elected to Parliament and upon the party notifying the Speaker or the President of the Senate.

Zanu-PF Mashonaland East acting provincial chair Cde Aeneas Chigwedere last week said the leadership would soon discuss Kaukonde’s fate.

The businessman and politician is allegedly a kingpin in a clique that sought to unconstitutionally remove President Mugabe and replace him with former Vice-President Dr Joice Mujuru. The plot has since resulted in the expulsion, suspension and removal from Government of several people, including Rugare Gumbo, Didymus Mutasa, Nicholas Goche, Dzikamai Mavhaire and others.

Kaukonde is also accused of illegally protecting white farmers, among other alleged misdeeds.

His constituents add that since his fall from grace he has abandoned them. The legislator has not attended Parliamentary proceedings this year.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail last week, Cde Chigwedere said: “Several members from his constituency have come to us to say that they want him recalled from Parliament. Chief among their concerns is that he has virtually neglected the constituency and he is hardly seen there.

“As acting chairman, I can only accede to the people’s will so we will have to look at all the procedures that need to be undertaken and proceed with that move. The issue should be discussed at out next provincial meeting. We will decide then if we will forward the submission to the Politburo.”

First Lady Dr Grace was the first to expose the anti-President Mugabe plot during her Meet the People tour before Zanu-PF’s December 2014 National Congress.

Following the exposure, the province passed a vote of no confidence in Kaukonde and his executive.
