Margaret Cho isn't one to shy away from topics of sex — that includes talk of her own past in the sex industry.
The outspoken comedian opened up about her former life as a sex worker to her thousands of Twitter followers Thursday, saying of herself and her fellow sex workers: "we were tough and proud."
"Sex work is simply work. For me it was honest work. I was a sex worker when I was young. It was hard but well paid. There's no shame in it," she said while expanding on a chapter of her life she appears to have rarely discussed.

Cho's candid remarks came in response to public criticism of the stigma attached to the sex industry — one where one Twitter user, @SadieXCummings, said "they pay us in the dark and shame us in the light."
"That's right. It's sickening that they drag us into their own suffering. We give them so much. It's their shame," Cho replied.
Asked if the work ever made it difficult for her to engage in relationships after, Cho — who filed for divorce from her husband of 11 years in August — replied with, "I don't believe so."

It was a traumatizing experience, one she discussed in September with Billboard magazine.
"I had a very long-term relationship with this abuser, which is a horrible thing to say. I didn't even understand it was abuse, because I was too young to know," she said.
In her emotional interview, she shared that she was raped between the ages of five and 12. There was a break before it began again at the age of 14.
Again addressing that experience with her Twitter fans, she said the only post-traumatic stress she's experienced is from that time, not as a sex worker as one individual questioned.

One of the things that she and others in the industry lacked, however, is protection, she said.
"It's hard work that's not protected by law enforcement or unions. It's unfair. We have the right to our bodies +work," she wrote.
That's something she said she hopes to help change.
