Post-Oscar drama alert—and it all started with a hairstyle critique.
While the likes of Vogue raved about Disney actress Zendaya Coleman's Oscar look, E! correspondent Giuliana Rancic wasn't feeling her long dreadlocks. During a Fashion Police Oscar recap yesterday, Rancic said, while complimenting the 18-year-old's Vivienne Westwood bridal gown, that "this hair overwhelms her. I feel like she smells like patchouli oil." "Or weed," added one of the show's co-hosts offscreen (it sounds like Kelly Osbourne, but she has since vehemently denied she made the comment). Here's the full clip.
Yikes. We expect irreverent/borderline-offensive commentary on E!, but clearly this crossed a line. Zendaya took to Instagram last night with an incredibly composed response.
Rancic promptly issued a public apology via Twitter: "Dear @Zendaya, I'm sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian-chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!"
Let us just go on the record saying we wholeheartedly agree with Vogue, which called Zendaya the breakout style star of the 2015 Oscars—"one part Lisa Bonet, one part Venus de Milo." (And don't even get me started on when she wears her hair curly.)
Thoughts on these comments about Zendaya's hair, her response, and Rancic's apology? Let's discuss.
