Smartphones are great. They let you do so many things, from browsing the web, connecting on social media, playing games, calling, messaging, and practically anything else you can think of.

You know what’s not so great? When you’re doing any of those things and you see your battery icon flashing red, and there’s no charging point in sight.
The 10 simple ways to extend your phone’s battery life
Unless you have a phone like the Sony Xperia™ Z3 that has an estimated standard usage time of 2 days, you will probably be one of those who will feel the frustration of the dreaded low battery warning. With the Sony Xperia™ Z3, you can have more time to take great photos with its 20.7MP camera, listen to music with its awesome Hi-Res Audio, enjoy the TRILUMINOS™ display for mobile with Live Colour LED and X-Reality™ for mobile with intuitive contrast enhancement for better viewing, even on a sunny day, or even use it to play games on the Sony PlayStation 4 using Remote Play.

So if you want to avoid running out of battery life while you’re smack in the middle of your day, try these tips to extend your battery usage.

1 Go dark
Your phone’s display might look extra awesome when the brightness level is on maximum, but most times, you don’t really need to make it so bright to function well.

Go to Quick Settings on the Sony Xperia™ Z3 and adjust your phone’s brightness manually to a level that is still comfortable for your eyes, and make sure to turn off functions that set the brightness automatically.

Likewise, try to go for darker themes so that the battery doesn’t have to work as hard to light up those pixels.

2 Turn off features you don’t need
When not in use, functions like Bluetooth, GPS, and LTE are unnecessary drains to your battery, so disable these when you don’t need them.

You can also click on the extreme right icon on the Sony Xperia™ Z3 to “Close all” the running functions at one go.

Keeping your Wi-Fi turned on when you are not connected to a hotspot usually means that your phone will keep scanning for a network. However, you can still keep it on if you want to make sure you automatically connect to a known network and avoid unnecessary usage of your mobile data plan. Just make sure the “Scanning always available” mode is off.
3 Keep it simple

More often than not, you don’t actually need all the widgets that are on your home screen. These also use up precious juice from your battery, especially if they need to connect to the Internet.

Animated live wallpapers, while cute and amusing, also use up more battery than static ones.
The Sony Xperia™ Z3 has nice coloured themes in the Personalization tab under Settings that would enhance the display but yet save on battery usage.

4 Stay updated

Most apps get updates to improve their efficiency, so it’s best to make sure you have the latest versions of your favourite apps.

Update in the most battery-friendly way by either setting apps to update only when you launch them, or updating your apps manually when your phone is plugged in.

Sony Mobile Communications will always notify you when a new system update is available.

Meanwhile, if you have old apps that you rarely or never use, deleting them may be a good idea to ensure that you get rid of unnecessary apps that may be running in the background.

5 Let your phone help you
Most phones have battery saving features already built in. For instance, the Sony Xperia™ Z3 has four different modes to help you extend your battery life.

Battery STAMINA mode keeps the phone battery going without much compromise to performance.

With Extended Standby mode, apps and functions will be turned off while you’re not using your phone, but you will still receive calls, texts, alarms, and selected notifications.

Extended Usage mode, meanwhile, gives you up to 14 per cent more usage time by adjusting your phone’s performance, while Ultra STAMINA mode lets you squeeze every last drop of juice from your phone when you’re running low on battery by limiting your phone to core functions like calls and text messages.

6 Tweak your auto sync
Setting your phone to auto sync to your Google accounts may be the easier way to make sure your mailbox and calendar are always up to date – but it’s also the easier way to add more strain to your battery.

Instead, go to your settings to decrease the frequency of the updates, or turn off auto-sync for those you don’t use.

7 Find out which of your apps suck
— the most battery juice, that is. When it comes to using power, not all apps are created equal. Some are just thirstier than most, and you can find out which ones are less efficient by looking at phone use under settings on your phone.

Also, periodically check which apps are running in the background and close those that are not in use.

8 Stop broadcasting your location
Turn off your location services to save battery life, and as a bonus, you’ll also save quite a few bytes off your data plan too!

9 Good vibrations?
When you need to keep your phone on silent, having your phone on vibrate is a good way to still get alerted to calls or SMS. However, doing so uses more power than a simple ring.
Good vibrations?
Edit your Quick Settings on Sony Xperia™ Z3 to include the sound icon so that the change from sound to mute is as easy as 123.

If you can’t do without the vibrate alert, at the very least, disable haptic feedback – the little twitch that you get when you touch a button – as this also needs more power than when you do without.

10 Give your phone a good timeout
Set your phone to timeout in the shortest time possible. Keeping your phone screen’s display on longer than necessary after using it is just not very practical for your battery. Apart from tweaking the settings, you can just consciously turn off the display as soon as you’re done with what you’re doing instead of just leaving it to go on standby by itself.

Meanwhile, you can also give your phone a break by resisting from turning it on every few minutes to check for updates and alerts.
