A driver accused of causing the fatal crash has been discharged from hospital and will be formally charged.
JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officials on Monday said they've now filed two counts of culpable homicide as part of their investigation into the death of Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere.
The 26-year-old died, along with a friend, in a car crash in northern Johannesburg on Saturday.
Mhere was travelling to OR Tambo International Airport with his father and a friend when the head-on collision took place.
Police say a driver accused of causing the fatal crash has now been discharged from hospital and will be formally charged.
JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane says officials suspect driver negligence.
“He just went straight and crossed the barrier on the middle island and then collided with Simba’s car.”
Mhere was driving on William Nicol Drive when his vehicle was struck by another car, killing him and a female passenger.
JMPD officials say information will soon be handed over to police ahead of the court case.
Mhere joined Top Billing in 2010 after winning the presenter search.
The charismatic presenter was expected to be part of the judging panel in search for new talent for the SABC 3 show.
His bosses say his presence always commanded respectful attention and his smile never failed to put everyone around him at ease.
