Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein criticised the ANC for paying for the funeral and praising the ex-top cop.
JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC)’s praise of former police commissioner Jackie Selebi is a moral disgrace that crossed the line, Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein said on Tuesday.
In an op-ed in The Star newspaper, Goldstein strongly criticised the ruling party for its reaction in response to Selebi's death.
The disgraced former top cop was in 2012 convicted of corruption and sentenced to 15 years in prison but was later released on medical parole due to a kidney-related disease. Selebi served a year of his sentence and died last month at the age of 64.
Goldstein says the ANC paying for Selebi's funeral and hailing him as a hero is an endorsement of corruption.
“It displays the lack of moral leadership and it’s a slap in the face of every decent South African. It constitutes a public endorsement for corruption.”
Convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti on Monday questioned the timing of new claims made about the case against the former police commissioner.
He insisted that his relationship was not an intelligence project as suggested by Selebi's allies.
Agliotti said claims against him that his friendship with Selebi was part of a sanctioned intelligence project was not true.
He added the timing of these suggestions was a joke.
The NPA on Monday said it considered the matter closed.
