A Harare man who has been on bail for allegedly stealing six vehicles worth over $200 000 after misrepresenting to their owners that he wanted to hire them has gone into hiding. Bransbie Bhamu (35) processed fake registration books before selling the cars at give-away prices between 2012 and 2013. The cars included a Nissan Hardbody, a Toyota Hilux double cab and a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Detective Inspector Monalisa Mangena yesterday said Bhamu’s whereabouts were unknown.

“The accused appeared in court, but later defaulted and was issued with a warrant of arrest to that effect,” she said.

“The suspect’s whereabouts are currently not known and we are appealing to anyone with information to contact Serious Fraud Squad on (04) 753543, Detective Insp Nyoni on 0772 604 018 or any nearest police station.”

In January 2013, Bhamu appeared in court before Mr Hosiah Mujaya charged with six counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Ms Kudzai Chigwedere alleged that on August 16 2012, Bhamu approached Stanmore Munyukwi at his home and hired his Nissan Hardbody worth US$15 000. They agreed that the car would be returned on September 8 the same year and that the hire fee would be $65 per day. The State alleged that Bhamu took away the car and never returned it.

It is alleged that with the help of Llyod Nyabunze, Bhamu obtained the duplicate registration book before selling the vehicle to Phillip Samudzimu for $6 500 on January 23. He used the same method to dupe other car owners and was reported to police leading to his arrest. Herald
