HARARE City Council has sacked Mr Jim Kunaka following allegations he swindled the municipality of about $4 000 daily at Mbare Musika where he illegally collected money from buses using the terminus. Council sources yesterday said Kunaka was dismissed after a disciplinary hearing. “When we saw that Kunaka was swindling council using youths in Mbare we then told his superior to transfer him to another station and he refused.
“Mr Kunaka instead came with youths at his superior’s offices in Remembrance Drive, Mbare, wearing shorts. The youths protested, denouncing the decision to transfer him.
“Council called Mr Kunaka for a disciplinary hearing where he was subsequently fired after noticing that he wanted to protect his personal interests,” said a source.
The city’s Human Resources and General Purpose’s chairperson councillor Wellington Chikombo yesterday said he was not aware if a council resolution to discipline Mr Kunaka had been implemented.
“I am still waiting for that report but we have adopted a zero tolerance to corruption and causing alarm and despondency within the ranks of council.
“We had allowed the devil to run away with the Bible from the pulpit for a long time,” he said.
At a recent council meeting councillors complained that the city’s management was failing to deal with Mr Kunaka.
Deputy mayor councillor Thomas Muzuva told councillors that at least 400 buses which used Mbare Musika paid $10 each, but the city was not getting anything as Mr Kunaka took the money.
“Kunaka is collecting $4 000 from council coffers every day. He is a grade 16 employee in council who is a worker in the housing department. We do not know why you (council directors) are afraid to stop him,” he said.
Budiriro councillor Panganai Charumbira weighed in saying Mr Kunaka was the de facto housing director.
Mr Kunaka dismissed the claims saying the councillors should report the matter to the authorities if they had a case against him.
“These councillors have failed to deliver in their wards and now they are making absurd claims. They must come up with such evidence that I am taking council money.
“If they have a case they should just report me to the police than rush to utter rubbish without carrying out any investigations,” he said. Herald
