Many people feel that a woman who asks a man out is loose and uncultured... but many others like yours truly feel otherwise.

The appropriateness of a woman wooing or making the first move in starting a relationship has been a well discussed topic.

While many people believe that it is improper, or that it shows an unwomanly forwarwardness for the female to approach a man with a love proposition, the more modern minds have argued it doesn’t matter who make the first move.

What Auntie Sue Asks…Is It Proper For A Woman To Ask A Man Out?
Just some minutes ago I was listening to Asa’s ‘Be My Man’, one of my favorite songs from that talented lady, and I find her position on the subject matter very interesting. She says:

My mama used to tell me girl
It ain't that cool to see a man you love
And start to act the fool
Tell me what's a girl in love supposed to do
Tonight, I'm breaking mama's rule

From the above, and the lines that follow in the son, you can easily deduce that she sees nothing wrong in a woman making an aggressive go for the man she thinks she loves.

Wha’anda sees nothing wrong in it either. In fact, I’d like to get toasted for a change. I am tired of doing the chase...let me be chased too. So from me, its totally cooooooool, but we know how the African, and indeed Nigerian culture views it.

It is not strange to see a woman labelled ‘prostitute’ for making advances at guy. Perhaps that is why even the women would rather die in silence than expose their heart-leanings to a guy - even if the guy is the closest of pals.

The best you can get from a woman is some over-the-top attention rather than outright confession of love.

Now, Wha’anda would like to know your position on this.

Would you speak up if you find a guy you love but who doesn’t seem to notice you or sees you as something else, say a friend. And guys, would you appreciate it if a girl walks up to you and says, “dude, be my man. I like you”?

Lets discuss people.
