FORMER Highlanders player Lincoln Siwela was yesterday fined for indecent assault after he grabbed and kissed a till operator in a Bulawayo supermarket. Siwela, 30, of Mzilikazi suburb, appeared before magistrate Sibongile Msipa. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $50 or two months in jail.
Prosecuting, Denmore Kasenza told the court that on June 2 at around 9.30PM, Letwin Mashanda was at her work station operating a till at a city supermarket.
Siwela walked into the shop and grabbed Mashanda’s shoulders before kissing her twice on the cheek.
Mashanda was not amused by Siwela’s antics. She reported the matter to the police leading to Siwela’s arrest.
In his defence, the former footballer told the court that he was influenced by evil spirits to commit the crime.
“Your worship, I was under the influence of alcohol and evil spirits caused me to do it but I want to apologise to the complainant and the court,” he said.
Msipa advised Siwela to stop drinking if it causes him to behave in the manner he did.
“How come you are not apologising to your wife? Don’t talk of evil spirits because they don’t exist. It’s because you have an attitude. As for beer, if you have a problem stop taking it,” she said.
Msipa also had words of wisdom for Siwela’s wife who was seated in the gallery, telling her to kiss her husband often so that he does not go around kissing other women.
“How often do you kiss your husband? Make sure you kiss him every day so that he does not go about kissing other women,” she said drawing laughter from the gallery.
In mitigation, Siwela told the court that he was a vendor, realising about $50 a month and was married with two children.
As he made his way out of court, the former Bosso player, who also played for Bantu Rovers, ran amok after noticing Chronicle photojournalists, prompting the prison officer who was accompanying him to give chase.
The former footballer took off at high speed, running around the court’s corridors.
After some time, he went to pay a fine but refused to leave the clerk’s office as he claimed he feared the photographers.
A few minutes later, Siwela emerged and threatened the Chronicle newscrew saying they should never set foot at Barbourfields Stadium.
