Two Kwekwe Men Jailed For Hacking Econet In US$12,436 Airtime Scam — But Most Of Their Sentences Were Suspended!

Two men from Kwekwe have been jailed for hacking into Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s computer system and exploiting airtime transactions in a highly sophisticated scam that cost the telecommunications company US$12,436.52 (approximately R204,000).

CYBER HEIST: Dumisani Mutwazi (33) and Tanaka Tayero (27) unlawfully accessed Econet's system to generate and sell airtime codes. None of the stolen US$12,436 has been recovered.

Despite the significant financial loss suffered by the network provider, the case has drawn attention because of the sentencing handed down at the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court. While the two perpetrators, Dumisani Mutwazi (33) and Tanaka Tayero (27), received 36-month sentences, the vast majority of their prison time was suspended.

How The Scam Was Exposed

The offences took place over a two-week period between 25 June and 10 July 2025. The cybercrime went unnoticed until an internal audit triggered alarms within Econet’s security infrastructure.

The Internal Audit The scheme was officially discovered on 11 July 2025, when an Econet corporate fraud specialist noticed highly suspicious purchase patterns while examining transactions made through Yomix and EcoCash.
Airtime for Cash Investigators established that Mutwazi and Tayero unlawfully accessed the company’s system to generate airtime access codes. These bundles were repeatedly purchased and distributed to several people on the black market in exchange for hard cash.

Why They Will Serve Only 8 Months

The two men were convicted at the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court. Although each man was slapped with a harsh 36-month sentence initially, court conditions drastically reduced their effective time behind bars.

The Sentence Deductions

10 Months Suspended

The court suspended 10 months of the sentence for five years on the condition of strict good behaviour.

18 Months for Community Service

A further 18 months were suspended on the condition that each man successfully completes 630 hours of unpaid community service.

8 Months Effective

After the deductions, this leaves exactly eight months of each sentence to be served as direct prison time.

The Legal Fallout

Zero Tolerance for Cybercrime The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) issued a stern warning following the sentencing: “Cybercrime undermines business confidence and causes financial losses. Perpetrators of such illegal activities will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Unrecovered Funds Despite the convictions, Econet’s reported financial loss of US$12,436.52 remains entirely unrecovered.

Crime & Courts Verdict

A Growing Tech Threat The case of Mutwazi and Tayero highlights the increasing sophistication of cybercrime targeting Zimbabwe's major telecommunications networks. As digital wallets like EcoCash and Yomix handle millions daily, internal corporate auditing remains the strongest line of defense against black-market syndicates.
Does the Punishment Fit the Crime? While the NPA promises strict prosecution, a net sentence of just 8 months in jail for orchestrating a highly technical, unrecovered US$12,400 heist raises debate on whether current sentencing guidelines are tough enough to deter future corporate hackers.
