The selfless woman who is trending on social media after she walked over 17 km to donate to victims of Cyclone Idai has finally been identified as Gogo Magombo.
Gogo Magombo was born Plaxedes Dilon and is a widow who earns her living selling second-hand clothes in Mbare. In an interview with Zimlive over the weekend, she explained that she had just returned home from vending when she heard the news of the devastating cyclone on the radio.
I immediately packed the clothes and jackets that I earlier purchased for resell and carried my bag to Star FM the following morning.
“Selfless Gogo” Who Attracted Strive Masiyiwa’s Attention For Her Generosity Finally Identified |
Gogo Magombo has been in the headlines twice now. First for walking from her home in Mbare (erroneously referred to as Highfields in an earlier post) to Highlands Presbyterian Church in order to donate to Cyclone Idai victim. She then made worldwide headlines again after billionaire businessman Strive Masiyiwa was so touched by her selfless nature and her desire to help others that he vowed to build her a house of her choice in any location in Harare as well as a monthly stipend of US$1000 per month for the rest of her days.
She is yet to comment on Masiyiwa’s offer but we at iHarare applaud her for her selfless nature and wish all the best for her.
