President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to put behind, any residual thoughts of the just ended election which gave him his first popular mandate as the country’s number one, adding that the disputed poll was free and fair.
He was speaking while presiding over the annual Heroes Day commemorations at the National Shrine on Monday afternoon.
“It is now time to put the election period behind us and embrace the future,” he said.
“The task facing us today is a great one. Let us unite as Zimbabweans, revive our economy and rebuild our great; the land of our dreams, the land of immense possibilities.”
Mnangagwa’s victory is being disputed by his closest challenger Nelson Chamisa of MDC Alliance who insists the poll was rigged.

The court action has forced the postponement of his inauguration which had been set for August 12.
“On 30 July 2018, you stood up and spoke loudly and clearly. You showed the world that not only could we all campaign in a spirit of peace and tolerance, wherever and however they saw it, we equally, together demonstrated that we could also hold free and fair elections.
“In the spirit of transparency, these were held in full glare of international observers and global media,” he said.
Mnangagwa pointedly accused his MDC Alliance rivals for inciting the post-electoral violence that saw the army shoot at protesters and bystanders leading to the death of six, beginning of this month.
“We condemn MDC Alliance violence which resulted in death of six people,” he said.
“We should never be deterred by temporary setbacks or regrettable events which we encounter in our course to build an open, free, democratic and prosperous Zimbabwe.”
