Four Mbare men who stole more than US$5 000 from a deceased woman on an accident scene will today know their fate when a Harare magistrate passes sentence.

Ernest Jonga, 23, Sedrick Kachengo, 20, Innocent Gumbo, 17, and Kelvin John, 21, will know their fate before Harare magistrate Barbara Chimboza where they are being charged of theft.

The quartet is said to have been the first to arrive at the accident scene on the day in question since they were driving behind the now deceased before she was involved in road accident.

Magistrate Chimboza, yesterday, said the witnesses of the four were not consistent with their evidence hence the court could not rely on them.

In their defence the quartet stated that on their way to Marondera on the night in question they came across an accident which involved a lorry and BMW vehicle. They argued they never trailed the lorry in question.

They also said when they arrived at the scene there were two other cars which were already there and whose passengers were there.

Circumstances leading to the conviction are that on November 12 last year the now deceased, Cathrine Maramwidze received US$5 510 from her business partner Aaron Nyapfumbi to purchase potatoes for resale in Nyanga.

The court heard that Maramwidze was involved in an accident while on her way to Nyanga and the quartet was the first to arrive at the scene since they were driving behind her.

The State proved that when the quartet arrived at the scene they took advantage that they were alone and searched the damaged vehicle and stole cash amounting to US$5 510.

They are said to have shared the money amongst themselves and went away unnoticed.

On November 27 detectives from CID Highlands received information that the quartet stole the money from the accident scene to which they reacted leading to their arrest.

Upon being arrested the four led the police to the recovery of property which they bought using the stolen money.

Idah Maromo appeared for the State.
