Rapper Nkululeko "Flabba" Habedi's murderer has been denied leave to appeal her conviction. On Tuesday, the High Court in Palm Ridge denied convicted murderer Sindisiwe Manqele’s leave to appeal her conviction. She was sentenced to 12 years in jail for the murder of her boyfriend.

Manqele had applied for leave to appeal her conviction in April.

She stabbed Habedi in the chest in March 2015 at his Alexandra, Joburg, home, after the two were involved in a heated argument.

The row was over Habedi’s ex-girlfriend, who had reportedly danced seductively in front of him at a Sandton nightclub just hours before the confrontation.

Manqele pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, saying she had acted in self-defence, after Habedi had pinned her down, rubbed his saliva over her face and poked at her stomach with a knife, while accusing her of seeking men who could better provide for her financially.

During the trial, under a pressing cross-examination from Prosecutor Paul Schutte, Manqele buckled under pressure and told the court that she had intentionally stabbed the hip-hop musician.

Testifying during sentencing proceedings for Manqele, clinical psychologist Teboho Seipati Monyamane said jail wouldn’t be “an ideal environment” for Manqele because she was demotivated and had a generalised sense of fear following her lover’s death. She had lost her appetitite, struggled to sleep, showed signs of anxiety and had shortness of breath.

Monyamane said Manqele claimed to have had another jealous lover before dating Habedi. The man had lived in Spain and met Manqele while on holiday in SA.

She went to visit him in Spain and decided to stay there. When the man became increasingly jealous and possessive, she moved to Ireland, as she did not feel safe anymore. She later entered into a long-distance relationship with Habedi.

Manqele is the last-born of four children. All three of her siblings died – two of them before she was born. Her brother died in 2009 and her mother six months later, from what Manqele said was a “broken heart”.

Manqele’s father and grandmother died months apart in 2015.
