PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has
castigated former colonial ruler Britain for alleged sadism. This comes
after Britain's admission to keeping skulls of some of the country’s
most celebrated heroes ofthe First Chimurenga war fought in the late
19th century.

He was said this in his address to thousands of people gathered at the National Heroes Acre to celebrate addressing the country’s annual Heroes Day commemorations on Monday.
President Mugabe said."Today as salute these fallen and living heroes for their unyielding tenacity and unflinching courage, we are sadly reminded of the human remains of some of our First Chimurenga heroes and heroines,”
President Mugabe, who was accompanied by his wife Grace, said he was confident one of the country’s most idolised heroines, Mbuya Nehanda's head could be among the shipped remains.
"...The remains, skulls, we strongly believe are the skulls of beheaded heads of Mbuya Nehanda, Sekuru Kaguvi, Chingaira Makoni, Chinengundu Mashayamombe, Mapondera, Mashonganyika and Chitekedza Chiwashira among others.”
President Mugabe, who spoke for almost an hour, lamented what he found to be grossly inhumane acts of decapitating and shipping human heads to “signify British victory over, and subjugation of, the local population”.
“Surely keeping decapitated heads as war trophies, in this day and age, in a National History Museum must rank among the highest forms of racist moral decadence, sadism and human insensitivity,” he said.
"Once all the necessary process have been completed for the return of these illicitly removed remains of our ancestors, it is our wish, in consultation with our traditional leaders, that they be given lasting rest, at sacred shrines on the very land against whose occupation they bravery fought".
President Mugabe said “tichaitora tichigunun'una kuti makaidimburirei (We will repatriate them grudgingly for decapitating them).
Although the First Chimurenga heroes are part of the country’s liberation war folklore, the national shrine, is largely a post-independence cemetery for those who led the 1970s war of liberation.
Meanwhile, ousted Vice President Joice Mujuru was conspicuous by her absence at the national shrine where close family members of the late national heroes took time to visit the graves.
She is wife to the late retired army commander, Solomon Mujuru, who died in a mysterious inferno in a family farm house in 2011.
The former VP has largely refrained from publicly expressing her frustrations over her ouster from Zanu PF.
She was last week described by President Mugabe as part of former Zanu PF "leaders of a subversive activity that was silently planning a coup de tat".
