A 26-YEAR-OLD Tsholotsho maid allegedly sexually abused her employer’s 14-year-old relative and infected him with a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Memory Sigabade pleaded not guilty to a count of aggravated indecent assault when she appeared yesterday before Bulawayo regional magistrate, Abednico Ndebele.

Sigabade of Xhanixhani village allegedly sexually abused the juvenile, a Grade Seven pupil, when he was left in her custody.

Giving his evidence on camera, the boy said on February 1 this year, he was left under the care of the maid. He said later at night, Sigabade entered his blankets and asked to be intimate with him but he refused.

“When I refused, she then dragged me into her blankets and began some funny dance moves as she lay on top of me and then sexually abused me once.

After the incident, she threatened that if ever I told anyone of the incident, she would beat me up,” said the boy.

He said on the following day, he started experiencing pain in his abdomen and it worsened every day until his teacher noticed the changes in the boy.

He said he then revealed to his teacher that their maid had sexually abused him.

“My thighs were sore, I felt pain on my abdomen . I was having difficulties in walking , until my teacher noticed and took me to hospital where I was given tablets and was told that I had contracted a sexually transmitted infection,” narrated the boy.

He said his relationship with Sigabade was not cordial as she would often beat him up for coming home late.

The boy said he only got home late on occasions when he went to his classmates’ homesteads to do homework.

Sigabade was employed by the boy’s maternal aunt in January this year who stayed in Dlamini village where she was running a business.

In her defence, Sigabade told the court that her relations with the boy were amicable and denied ever abusing him.

“I don’t know anything concerning his abuse. Actually he is bitter that I chastised him about a relationship with a Form Two pupil because she was dating an HIV positive guy in the area.

I beat him up several times to stop the relationship because I feared he would contract diseases,” she said.

Sigabade said that she had a boyfriend in the neighbourhood and would not sleep with a minor.

Prosecuting, Concillia Ncube told the court that on February 1 this year at around 12AM, Sigabade was sleeping in the same bedroom with the teenage boy but in different blankets.

“While the boy was sleeping, Sigabade dragged the boy into her blankets and forcibly removed his clothes and abused him once. Thereafter, she threatened to assault him if he told anyone about the incident,” said Ncube.

She said the matter came to light after the boy began experiencing pain in his private parts and had difficulties in walking.

Ncube said the boy’s teacher interviewed him and reported the matter at Tsholotsho Police station leading to the arrest of Sigabade.

The boy’s teacher, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, said he noticed that the boy was limping and had absconded from school the previous day.

“The boy came late to school. I noticed through the window that he was limping as he was coming. I asked him why he was limping and he said his knee was painful and the whole class burst into laughter. He then began crying and I sensed that there could be more to it. This prompted me to pull him into the storeroom to avoid embarrassment,” said the teacher.

He said initially the boy said he was feeling pain in his private parts as he was hit by a ball during a soccer match but later revealed the truth upon further interrogation.

“We took him to the local clinic where he was treated and the sister-in-charge made a report to the police and advised us to call his guardian,” the teacher said.

The matter was remanded to Friday for continuation of trial when the sister-in-charge of Dlamini clinic is expected to testify.
