A 40-year-old man who raped an infant aged 4 and claimed he was possessed by evil spirits when he committed the crime has been sentenced to 18 years in jail term by magistrate Collet Ncube.
Jametius Makotore of Chikanga village under Chief Pasipashe Mapanzure, will serve an effective 15 years after three years was suspended on conditions.
Jametius was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he made his initial appearance at the Magistrate court on Tuesday.
He also stunned the court when he pleaded to be set free to allow marriage talks with the minor’s family.
Prosecutor Sophia Bhusvumani told the court that on 15 June this year, the infant left home to play with other children who reside at Jametius’ homestead.
The infant’s mother had gone to Masvingo city to sell some wares.
When the girl arrived at Jametius’ homestead, he grabbed and led her into the kitchen, kissed her and laid her on the floor where he forcibly removed her clothes and proceeded to rape her.
After the abuse, he let the girl go home.
When the girl arrived home she told her mother about the abuse.
The mother observed blood stains on her daughter’s clothes and rushed the girl to Masvingo Provincial Hospital. A police report was made leading to the arrest of Jametius.
A medical report was provided as evidence.
