THE state on Friday seemingly withdrew charges of illegally occupying gazzetted land levelled against Matopo white farmer, Peter Cunningham whose farm seizure was reserved by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko a fortnight ago.

Cunningham had been summoned to appear at the Gwanda magistrate's courts but he never turned up raising speculation his case had been struck off the role.

Prosecutors could not give a satisfactory answer on the matter but a court official who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had been advised to halt charges against the white farmer.

Matobo villagers successful protested the takeover of the Maleme Ranch by CIO spy Rodney Mashingaidze arguing Cunningham was helping them in various income generating programmes.

The farm seizure was reserved by Mphoko following a public outcry.

Meanwhile Timothy Sean White of Esigodini appeared before the same courts facing charges of failing to vacate Essexvale farm which has since been allocated to another senior CIO spy, Zenzo Ntuliki.

The trial continues next month.

Ntuliki currently runs a popular Bulawayo Hotel while he has other properties in the Matabeleland South and Midlands provinces. New Zimbabwe
