Zimbabwe - Marauding youths allegedly stripped MDC-T legislator for Bulawayo East Thabitha Khumalo and left her topless in violent clashes at the party’s district rally in Njube suburb.
In an interview after the incident, Khumalo accused police of tearing off her T-shirt and leaving her to walk on the streets in her bra.
MDC-T youths who last week vowed to beat up Zanu-PF youths who they claimed would try to disrupt their party President Morgan Tsvangirai’s visit to Bulawayo, went wild during the rally.
The youths started identifying people they called Zanu-PF infiltrators in their midst and turned Njube streets into a war zone in violent clashes.
There was drama as the alleged Zanu-PF Youths fled for dear life and went to hide at Njube Police Station.
One of the youths was knocked unconscious by a heavily built MDC-T youth just outside the police station as his colleagues scrambled through the gate.
Police officers armed with batons restored order amid reports that at least four other women had their T-shirts torn off in the clashes.
An MDC-T youth said that they had taught Zanu-PF hooligans a lesson they would never forget.
“They pretended to be vendors in Gweru and disrupted President Tsvangirai’s meet the people tour in Gweru. We were ready for them in Bulawayo and we beat them up,” said the youth who declined to be named.
Tsvangirai was not at the rally because he reportedly rushed to Harare where party members were allegedly assaulted by police who were reportedly looking for a missing helmet at Harvest House.
Tsvangirai arrived in Bulawayo on Wednesday and was supposed to leave on Sunday.
