HARARE. – It has become a norm for gospel ministers to showcase their wealth publicly. Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa is not intimidated to reveal his latest car and his source of wealth. During a recent conference, he revealed that he invested heavily on the London Stock Market.
Prophet Passion Java is also in the same league having purchased cars for his lieutenants for a monstrous figure of $500 000. He is one not to shy away from flamboyancy and firmly asserting that the act is through abundant 'God's grace'.
Contrary, Prophet Walter Magaya leads the fastest growing ministry in Zimbabwe in terms of figures. In our previous article (If Chiyangwa has it, why not Makandiwa); we expand further on this issue. His singular service is reportedly attended by crowds exceeding 200 000. But we know nothing much about his financial worthy, his source of income and much about his wife either. For the curious mind, there must be something ambiguous about his lifestyle. Or to the conservative, he is 'just another guy next door'.
Except for his designer shirts and sometimes appearing at the service in sandals, his humbleness is over emphasised. He is known for driving low cost vehicles but he has purchased houses for people. When he speaks, he talks big but it seems it all ends there, at the pulpit. As we write, he does not have a properly structured ministry outside his Harare base. The forefather of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD) claims that he is not rich but ‘rich enough to give.’ The Zimbabwe Christian community is wise beyond this flattery. If someone is rich, that's it. If he gives or not, that's something for another day.
Parceling his life recently, he said this was how he aspired to live his life as he understood that he was still human despite the tens of thousands of people who flocked to his church weekly. Magaya emphasised that fame was also not something that one had to carry in one’s head.
“I am a man of God and not God of man. If I am a prophet and become very popular, I have to make sure that I stay composed. Right now, I even have to control my movements. So I avoid walking in crowded areas like the city centre because I end up causing unnecessary commotion and people might get hurt. That is why I prefer to spend most of my time at church, meeting people there."
He has chosen to be deferent from other flamboyant preachers. Prophet Magaya does not drive a latest car nor does he dress like a glitzy businessman. He opts for cheap tracksuits and sandals. Prophet Magaya said if a person was popular and influential in society, that person was obliged “to keep his head down,” The interview comes soon after his allegedly adultery scandal. Some sections have stated that he paid a $500 000 sweetener to silence the aggrieved part Denford Mutashu, though the prophet says “there is no testimony without test. There is no way we can be where we are without being tested.”
The man later withdrew his claims and confessed openly in church, after withdrawing his court action. Meanwhile, the prophet had the audacity to sponsor a strip dancer Beverly “Bev” Sibanda to start a clothing business. The dancer absconded church and returned to her original vocation.
Although much is now know and written about the man, his beginning was modest. He was born in Mhondoro Ngezi and launched his ministry in 1998 while attending Roman Catholic Church in Chitungwiza. In 2003 he was in Mabvuku where his gift of prophecy flourished. In the meantime, all his efforts to venture into business flopped, until he went to Nigeria in 2009, where he visited TB Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations. Magaya said the turning point was when TB Joshua prophesied to him that he was not a businessman, but was a gifted prophet.
“Prophet TB Joshua also gave me some anointing oil and that is how I managed to start a ministry in 2011, which initially had less than 40 congregants. The ministry started to grow to 100 and then 500 people. Then we were on 5 000 people but now we get as much as 80 000 to our Sunday service or even more.”
The astronomical rise to fame is acute. Assuming that every member gives at least $1 as an offering, the church collects $80 000 every service, this is besides tithes and other collections. If they hold two services a week, their collection jumps to $160 000. When that figure is multiplied by four weekends per month, it means PHD alone handles over $600 000 per month, without considering other income generating projects such as tuck-shops, wrist bands, stickers etc.
Voted as the 2014 most influential person below the age of 40, Magaya has now even managed to launch a television station, Yadah Television; has assisted more than 5 000 families; and has donated houses to several people. Asked whether he was a fake prophet out to milk money from people and whether he used juju in his healing ministry as his detractors allege. Magaya laughed this off saying that almost 98 percent of the people who came to his church also had the same misconception at some point. Responding to a question regarding whether his church was some form of a personal money-making business, based on its teachings of prosperity, Magaya said there was nothing bad about preaching prosperity.
“In my ministry if you look at our teachings they are about empowering people to be entrepreneurs. The gospel of Jesus Christ was of prosperity, his first teaching was ‘I have come to preach to the poor, empower those that have not been empowered’. How do we empower people? Someone comes with a problem which needs urgent attention and is maybe charged $20 000 at hospital but when he or she is healed here, they will have saved the money. So, who would have been empowered with $20 000, the ministry or the healed person?” he asked.
He added that, he always endeavored to remain with 10 percent of what he got and distribute the other 90 percent. But is true that he keep the 10 percent like he claims when we cannot access his bank accounts and do not know of his foreign stashes and investments.
