Maxwell Matare appeared before magistrate Sibonginkosi Mkandla with his co-accused Victor Chademana, an official from the Registrar General's office who issued a false burial order to Matare.

However, Chademana will be tried separately and Maxwell has been given 30 days to raise the money or spend the next 12 months in prison.

Prosecutor Joshua Mundodo told the court that in August 2013 the two hatched a plan to defraud First Mutual Life Assurance of cash.

The court heard that Chademana issued a false burial order in the name of Kyla Matare, Maxwell's first daughter, purporting that the daughter had died at Ngomahuru hospital.

The court was told the company then paid Maxwell the $750 claim.

Mundodo pleaded for a heavy sentence on Maxwell arguing that Maxwell's wife, Mary Matare, a police officer stationed at Mashava police station, is also facing fraud charges involving the same assurance company.

Mundodo said Mary is expected to appear in court soon facing charges of defrauding First Mutual Life Assurance of $1 500 after she had faked the death of her husband.
