IT is my hope that most if not all of us are now back to business after the long festive season. While many are already complaining about the usual ‘‘January disease’’, the fact remains that we all should begin to work hard and set the momentum for this fresh year, otherwise we will soon find ourselves in another December again without anything to show for it.
Among many other important objectives of the year is the need to make sure that Government delivers on its various key result areas to the public. Last year saw a major shake-up in Government structures and among many notable changes to Cabinet make-up was the appointment of Cde Mandi Chimene as Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs.
Let me take this opportunity to congratulate her. It is your time, Madam Minister, and we wish you well in your new office. As soon as Cde Chimene was appointed she did not waste time in expressing her vision and expectations.
While her predecessor Cde Chris Mushohwe at one point complained about a state of almost redundancy due to lack of interaction and consultation with various line ministries and other important provincial stakeholders, it seems Cde Chimene knows exactly what she is supposed to do. She knows her key results areas and she also knows that she is the provincial authority and so everyone and every ministry, local authority, NGOs and private companies should know that she is in charge. From what she is saying one can easily tell that she is not excited about being the province’s highest authority but she is excited or rather motivated by the desire to serve the nation she helped liberate. She is one woman among a few who remains with a genuine passion to see things happen for every Zimbabwean.
She is a fiery cadre who still possesses the same convictions and attributes that saw her forsake her teenage life to join the liberation struggle. While many former liberators seem to have forgotten the reason why they joined the liberations struggle, this woman is still on course to realise the full potential of Zimbabwe to benefit all Zimbabweans.
When I see Cde Chimene, I am quickly reminded of Cde Chinx Chingaira; they possess similar enthusiasm for the nation. It’s like they were cut from the same cloth. Cde Chimene’s language is one of work, commitment, honesty and professionalism. She knows that she has a boss to report to and His Excellency President Mugabe wants results and he wants them as soon as yesterday.
While President Mugabe is waiting for favourable developmental feedback from the province, the Manicaland population is also restless because they can’t wait to have their lives improved. Remember Manicaland bore much of the brunt of the liberation struggle and also produced several liberation icons and is also host to several tourist attractions and valuable minerals which are yet to really benefit the province. Can you imagine that 34 years after independence Manicaland does not have an airport! I still don’t understand.
Diamonds were discovered a long time ago and worryingly there are reports that the Chiadzwa diamonds are now deep underground and it requires expensive, complicated machinery and equipment to extract them, but we never realised any benefit from the initial, extensive mining of the mineral.
The country is endowed with several valuable resources, but we are still poor. This is why it becomes important for Cde Chimene to waste no time but begin to demand results because she is already in the spotlight. Whether she emerge as a hero or villain at the end of her tenure, only time will tell. However, it is important to remind everyone that she can achieve much only with our maximum support. Let us share her zeal to serve because it is only the right thing to do.
Together we can transform this province to become a source of pride for this beautiful country Zimbabwe. Lastly, Cde Chimene I applaud you for boldness. It makes a difference.
