IT was a traditional ritual . . . and cops weren’t invited! But this angry family say the police invited themselves. They arrived and accused the guests of drinking in public.
Calabashes full of traditional beer were sent flying as cops allegedly kicked them out of guests’ hands. They say what should have been a peaceful day in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, ended in violence.
But the angry family said the cops will get what’s coming to them – because they have angered their ancestors!
Sibongile Ngwenya, at whose house the ritual was held on Friday, said she was shocked by what the cops did.
“Police made my ancestors angry. I came home to find people with blood on their faces.
“There was nothing wrong. Instead of fighting crime somewhere else, they came and harassed innocent people,” said Sibongile.
“People perform rituals for a reason. If someone disturbs such a ceremony it could be a curse on them.”
Mbuyise Chavula (35) from Katlehong was at the ceremony.
“We had a peaceful time the whole day. Later on we saw cops parking their van outside the house. They came and asked for the owner, but the mama who had the ceremony had just left the house,” he said. “When she returned she found broken beer calabashes scattered all over the yard.”
Three people were also allegedly slapped through the face by cops.
Mathapelo Moloi (38), who was also at the ceremony, said she couldn’t believe what she saw.
“One officer was very rude. He looked young but spoke to elders with no respect.
“Having authority does not mean you can disobey elders. These police officers were abusing their powers,” said Mathapelo.
Captain Mega Ndobe of Katlehong police station said police were on a normal patrol when they identified a house selling liquor.
“Police went to check the owners’ liquor licence when a suspect confronted the cops and interfered with officers on duty,” he said. Daily Sun
