MADURAI: A court in Tirunelveli on Wednesday sentenced a man to life for hurling his infant daughter to death from a moving train after a fight with his wife.

Murugan (38) of Kesavaneri in Tirunelveli and his wife, Poomari (28), were travelling on a train from Nagercoil to Tirunelveli on October 22, 2013. They were carrying their six-month-old daughter, Mariselvi, with them.

The couple had a fight on the train, and the man caught hold of the baby and hurled her into the Thamirabarani river when the train was crossing a bridge.

The next day, Poomari went looking for her daughter near the bridge and recovered the body from the banks of the river.

Some passerby saw her carrying the body and crying loudly. They handed her over to police.

An interrogation revealed that woman's husband had murdered the baby girl, and he was arrested.
