Police have reportedly launched investigations into circumstances surrounding the ‘controversial’ death of Chipo Chakanyuka, a woman who allegedly had a secret affair with Prophetic Healing and Deliverance ministries (PHD) founder,Walter Magaya, The Zimbabwe Mail reports!
Chipo, who was PHD head of ushering, died in a Botswana prison last month.
According to Chipo’s mother, Tambudzayi Chakanyuka, detectives from the country’s homicide section quizzed them on what they thought happened to their daughter as well as the alleged affair between her (Chipo) and Magaya.
Chipo reportedly committed suicide in a Botswana prison after she was caught with three pieces of gold at the border post, while on church business.
Tambudzayi said police detectives summoned them to Harare Central Police Station where statements were recorded for further investigations.
“Two police detectives from homicide came here (Warren Park home) on Tuesday and invited us for questioning. Today (Thursday) we went there and we told them what we know and people who we think are involved in the case,” she said.
However, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Mona Lisa Mangena, declined that police were pursuing the matter, stating that since Chipo committed suicide outside the country, they had no jurisdiction to probe anything.
“That is a closed matter to us, the girl you are talking about committed suicide in a Botswana prison and we have nothing to do with it,” she said.
But police officers from CID section said the probe was on and that it was is being handled by top officers from homicide and the police headquarters.
“The case has attracted interest of the state’s security and top police officers from PGHQ who want to know the character of this man called Magaya, as well as what really transpired prior to her departure for Botswana. Remember, this girl once went to Warren Park Police Station and tried to make a police report about alleged threats, so the chefs here want to know what really happened (sic),” a police source said.
Magaya, though, denied having an affair with Chipo, describing her as a stripper who was plunked from taverns – a statement challenged by the mother who accuses Magaya of having a secret affair with the late usher between March and May which, however, turned sour later on.
Another police source said all people named in the case would be summoned to assist the law enforcement agents with their investigations.
Last week Chipo’s aunt sensationally claimed that their daughter was “in a secret relationship” with Magaya between March and April, although the relationship was known to all family members, including Chipo’s mother, Tambudzayi .
Tambudzai confirmed knowledge of the affair, saying her younger sister would give finer details.
However, last Sunday Magaya denied having an affair, with Chipo, let alone having a hand in her death and accused The Zimbabwe Mail of being used to tarnish his image.
This is not the first time that Magaya has been implicated in a sex scandal as in July; he was dragged to the courts by a Harare man claiming that the prophet, as he is called by his followers, was bedding his wife.
The matter was, however, withdrawn from the courts before trial.
