A 39-YEAR-OLD Victoria Falls man has been granted custody of his two children after he argued that his ex-wife, who is now a prostitute, was not fit to take care of the children.
Clever Dube and Nontando Mhlanga, 32, separated after 13 years of marriage and have two daughters aged 13 and four.
Dube, who had been paying $180 maintenance since last year, approached the court seeking custody of the children.
He told the court that the environment in which his daughters were staying was not ideal for children as they were exposed to shebeen life and strangers who might “end up abusing them”.
“The house is full of different people of different character who are always drinking beer and using vulgar language in front of children.
“There is no water at the house and the children are exposed to some water-borne diseases while the mother usually brings men who now scare my children,” Dube said in his application.
The couple’s four-year-old was invited to testify.
“I have two mothers and I love my mother because she cooks nice food more than my other mother,” the girl said referring to her step-mother.
Dube also claimed that his eldest daughter sometimes flees from her mother at night because drunken men would allegedly be trying to sexually molest her.
“She would flee every time around 11pm and come to my place and I feel my children risk being abused if I do not take measures because of the environment they live in.
“Since I took the little girl she (ex-wife) has never come to visit her because she spends all her time drinking beer,” he said.
Mhlanga dismissed the allegations as untrue, accusing her former husband of trying to discredit her in front of their children.
“He left me for a workmate and I remained with the kids. He is only saying this to discredit me because he even tells my daughters that I am a prostitute as he also doesn’t want to pay maintenance,” said Mhlanga.
The magistrate, Sharon Rosemani, granted Dube custody saying the children were happy to live with their father.
She also gave Mhlanga rights of access so she could visit the children.
