Zanu-PF is owed more than US$3 million by Treasury under the Political Parties Finance Act, but the party will find other ways of raising funds to hold its forthcoming women and youth congresses as planned next month.
Party spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said in an interview yesterday that the revolutionary party was finalising the list of candidates contesting for positions in the Women’s League and the Youth League for those who will be in the Central Committee.
“We have not yet been paid the money that Treasury owes us under the Political Parties Finance Act, but we are sure it will be soon from what we have gathered,” Cde Gumbo said.
“I cannot tell you how much is required, but what I can tell you is that the two conferences will be held one way or the other.
“As of last year, the party was owed US$1,1 million and this year we are owed US$2,2 million.”
Cde Gumbo said the party would announce names of those contesting in the Youth League positions next week.
“We just concluded the rules and regulations of the guidelines, so we are waiting for the implementation of that document and we should be able to know by next week because it is only two weeks to go now before the youths hold their meeting which is on August 7 and August 10.”
The women’s congress will be held from August 20 to August 23, with both congresses set for Harare.
Zanu-PF Harare provincial chairman Cde Amos Midzi said no names had been submitted to the provincial executive by those interested in the positions.
Manicaland provincial chairman Cde John Mvundura said the situation was the same in the province.
Makoni West legislator Kudzi Chipanga and Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena are said to be leading contenders for the deputy secretary of the Youth League.
The incumbent deputy secretary is Cde Edson Chakanyuka, while Cde Absolom Sikhosana is the secretary for the youth wing.
The secretary for the wing is appointed by President Mugabe who is the First Secretary and President of the party.
