As the founder and content creator of the Facebook Sex Talk with The Help Doctor , I have a significant platform related to marriage, so I get asked often about my views on Gay Marriage and homosexuality. Recent court decisions and a firestorm of controversy surrounding comments made by Duck Dynasty Patriarch, Phil Robertson, have brought these issues front and center into the national spotlight sparking passionate debate. Many people much smarter than myself are sharing their beliefs, but I feel compelled to add to the discussion with my own convictions.
My beliefs on this subject (and most every other subject) come straight from my faith. I’m an imperfect guy following a perfect Savior and as a follower of Jesus, I firmly believe that Jesus loves Gay people and I do as well. I’m going to do my best to dissect a very complex issue in a few short paragraphs which is nearly impossible, but I hope that my words will spark a healthy dialogue motivated by a desire for deeper understanding and mutual respect.
As it relates to marriage, I believe that God is the one who created marriage, so He is the only one who can define it. He established Marriage as a sacred covenant which unites an imperfect man to an imperfect woman with a perfect love, a lifelong commitment and a passionate partnership. From everything I read in the Bible, this relationship is meant exclusively for a man and a woman in a monogamous, heterosexual, lifelong relationship. I don’t believe it is our place to redefine something that God has so clearly created and established.
This issue has divided many churches, and I believe that many churches have done a shameful thing by singling out the Gay Community as some sort of special breed of “Super Sinners” and the schism between Evangelicals and those living a homosexual lifestyle continues to grow. I do not believe that this is God’s will or a Biblical expression of God’s love and grace. With that being said, I also know that the Bible has very set guidelines for the powerful gift of Sex. It is to be used and enjoyed within the context of a marriage between a man and a woman. Any use beyond that will eventually cause emotional, spiritual, and possibly even physical devastation. Any form of homosexual sex would fall into this category of being outside the boundaries of God’s plan or more specifically…sin.
To sum this up, I believe that God sees equal value in every life, but not in every lifestyle.
If you’re living a homosexual lifestyle, please know that God loves you. He is for you. This, however, does not mean that He is for your lifestyle. Anyone of us can fall into the trap of trying to justify any type of sin, but whatever the sin (whether sexual or otherwise), if we choose to continue in it without repentance, we will slowly become more calloused and blind towards the Truth of God in our lives and find ourselves in the dangerous trap of rewriting (or ignoring) Scripture to fit our choices instead of rewriting our choices to fit with Scripture. I encourage you to trust God enough to seek His plan for all areas of your life. The Bible teaches that His perfect plans are plans to prosper and not to harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future (see Jeremiah 29:11).
Whether or agree or disagree with my beliefs, please know that I value and respect you and pray God’s blessings for your life.
