A 33 year old woman from village Madenga under Chief Mugabe axed her sleeping husband to death before setting his lifeless body on fire, a local court heard on Monday.

Mavis Madenga was not asked to plead to murder charges when she appeared before magistrate Peter Mandinda.

She was remanded in custody to next week and was asked to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor, Fidelis Nyamukondiwa, told the court that on 13 May this year, Madenga had a misunderstanding with her husband, the now deceased Joseph Marisa, over infidelity issues.

The court heard that Madenga waited for her husband to be asleep and, at around 0200 hours, took an axe and struck him twice on the head killing him instantly.

Madenga then tried to destroy the evidence by setting the bedroom hut on fire with her dead husband inside before shouting out to neighbours to help put out the fire.

Marisa’s body was burnt beyond recognition and investigations by the police resulted in Madenga confessing to axing her husband and setting the hut ablaze.
