Fifty persons were today shot dead and dozens of others injured in the early hours of Sunday June 12 after a gunman opened fire inside a packed gay club in Orlando, Florida, United States of America.

Reports say the 50 people were killed in what authorities are now describing as a case of domestic terrorism at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub.

The shooter, who police have identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old immigrant, was reportedly shot and killed by the police after a shootout.

Although the said Mateen was born in Florida, his parents are believed to be immigrants from Afghanistan.

The Police are still trying to identify the possible motives for the shooting. Orlando Police Chief, John Mina said at a Sunday-morning news conference, “It appears he was organized and well-prepared.”

Police reports reveal that the shooter had an assault-type rifle and a handgun.

According to authorities, the FBI is involved in the investigation and were investigating the possible radical Islamic “leanings” of the suspect. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said;

“This is an incident…that we certainly classify as a domestic terror incident.”

Reacting to the incident, Pope Francis on Sunday condemned as “homicidal folly and senseless hatred” the mass shooting at the gay nightclub in Orlando in which at least 50 people were killed.

A statement from the Holy See disclosed that the attack…

“…has caused in Pope Francis, and in all of us, the deepest feelings of horror and condemnation… before this new manifestation of homicidal folly and senseless hatred.

“We all hope that ways may be found, as soon as possible, to effectively identify and contrast the causes of such terrible and absurd violence.”

This particular gay club attack in Orlando, Florida is perhaps the worst mass shooting in US history according to analysts.
