A BUSINESSMAN from Bikita has committed suicide after failing to deliver vehicles worth more than $20,000 that he had been commissioned to import from Japan by a number of people.
One of the people who last year gave Donati Mujaji $7,000 to import a vehicle on his behalf yesterday said he had taken the matter to court and a hearing had been scheduled for Thursday. Mujaji, 44, of DME Garage, allegedly drank a poisonous substance last Friday after some people who had given him money to import the cars asked for reimbursements.
The businessman was rushed to Silveira Mission Hospital after taking the poison and died in the evening of the same day. Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa conŨrmed the incident. “I can conŨrm the sudden death by suicide of a Bikita businessman. The deceased is said to have consumed poison but the reason is unknown. His body was taken to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Police are still investigating the matter,” said Asst Insp Dehwa.

Sources at Nyika Growth Point in Bikita told The Chronicle that Mujaji, a car dealer, received money from a number of people in and around the area to import vehicles on their behalf for a fee.
They said the businessman had some problems with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) resulting in some of the cars being auctioned for a song. “Mujaji failed to clear a number of vehicles belonging to his clients resulting in Zimra auctioning them. This left him with huge debts amounting to about $20,000 and owners of the cars kept pestering him with others demanding their money back. “I think he could no longer stand the pressure as some were threatening to drag him to court for their money and as a result he took an unknown pesticide leading to his death,” said a source.
One of Mujaji’s clients, Wilbert Chakanyuka, who was owed $7,000 for a Toyota Granvia that the businessman was supposed to import from Japan, said he had already filed a lawsuit to recover his money. “Mujaji had my money amounting to $7,000 that I gave him to get me a car, a Toyota Granvia from Japan. I was expecting to get my car in September, 2015, but up to now I haven’t yet received the car or my money back. The matter was supposed to be heard in court this coming Thursday, April, 14,” said Chakanyuka.
Other clients that he owed money could not be located but sources alleged that they include police officers in and around Bikita district.
