Home Affairs Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo last Friday gazetted public holidays for next year. The notice was contained in a Government Gazette published on Friday. “It is hereby declared that, in terms of Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act (Chapter 10:21), the days listed in the schedule will be public holidays in 2016.
“This list does not include any days which the President may declare to be public holidays in terms of Section 2 (2) of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act (Chapter 10:21),” read the notice. New Year’s Day will be on Friday January 1, 2016, while Easter Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be held from March 25 to 28 2016.
Independence Day will be held on Monday April 18, 2016. Workers’ Day will fall on Sunday May 1, 2016. Africa Day will be on Wednesday May 26, 2016. Heroes’ and Defence Forces’ Days will be held on Monday August 8 and 9 August 2016 respectively. National Unity Day will be held on Thursday December 22, 2016 while Christmas Day and Boxing Day would fall on December 25 and 26 2016.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Chief Elections Officer, Mrs Constance Chigwamba has appointed Mr Taurai Gavi as constituency elections officer for Epworth by-elections set for September 19, 2016. The notice was contained in a Government Gazette published last week.
“It is hereby notified that the Chief Elections Officer has, in terms of Section 4 of the Electoral Regulations, 2005, published in Statutory Instrument 21 of 2005, appointed Gavi Taurai to be the constituency elections officer for Epworth National Assembly constituency. The address of the constituency elections officer shall be Epworth Secondary School,” read the notice.
The Epworth by-election occurred after the death of Cde Amos Midzi in a suspected case of suicide in June this year. Four candidates filed their names to contest in the by-elections. The four are Cde Zalerah Hazvineyi Makari of Zanu-PF, Mr Tsikirai Muchena from Transform Zimbabwe, Mr Genacious Muzambi of Zapu and Mr Daniel Foya an independent.
