Self proclaimed prophet Penuel Mnguni, who made his congregants eat a snake, was briefly arrested on Saturday at his church in Soshanguve on animal cruelty charges. He was later released after posting R,1000 bail. Surprisingly, he was not arrested for being 'cruel' to human beings, but to an animal.

Police spokeswoman Captian Rheneineth Motlana said the 27-year-old pastor would appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court today.

Charges against Prophet Mnguni were laid by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) after photos of him making congregants eat a snake went viral on social media.

Mnguni claimed that he picked the hapless reptile from the bushes and brought it to his church, with congregants claiming that it tasked like chocolate.

If convicted in terms of the Animals Protection Act, the man of God faces a fine of up to R4,000, imprisonment not exceeding 12 months or jail time without the option of a fine.

An official at Mnguni's End Times Disciples Ministries said she could not respond to questions on the pastor's arrest during the church prayer session at the weekend.

Last week, Mnguni said he had eaten a lizard before. He had previously made some congregants eat hair and rags, claiming God had the power to make a person eat anything. Prophet Mnguni claimed his stunt was not to test God but to demonstrate His power.

In 2012, mother of three, Antoinette van Wyk was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for five years, and another 12 months house arrest after pleading guilty to animal cruelty. This was after she left her dog to suffer in agony after one of its legs was ripped off, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
