Western Cape police have confirmed that Desmond Tutu’s granddaughter, Ziyanda, has been charged with malicious damage to property.
Speaking to News24, Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the charge was laid at Milnerton Police station last Thursday by Ziyanda’s grandmother, Leah.
“This office can confirm that a malicious damage to property case was opened for investigation at Milnerton Saps by the complainant against her granddaughter on Thursday, May 7″, van Wyk told the site via email.

News 24 reports that a press release issued by the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation during the course of the week revealed that there would indeed be charges laid against Ziyanda Tutu.
Tutu’s granddaughter told Netwerk24 on Thursday that she was deeply hurt after the Anglican Archbishop Emeritus and his wife Leah laid the criminal charge against her.
While Tutu revealed that he and his wife were upset and heartbroken that “it had to come to that,” as quoted by News24.
Tutu’s granddaugter said the issue could have been dealt with in a more private manner and blamed mostly her grandmother whom she said she has never had a good relationship with.
The 30-year-old took to her twitter to address the issue and to announce handing herself over to the police.
