BY DAY she would serve beer and mbamba to her customers. But at night the shebeen queen would hit the books. Now Mosele Tladi (60) has graduated with a diploma in teaching!
And the gogo from Bekkersdal said she’s planning to study even more.
“I don’t want to be a shebeen queen forever. I studied to make something out of my life,” she said.
The gogo, who has graduated through Unisa, said it wasn’t easy to balance the business and studies.
“Working as a shebeen queen demands a lot.
“During the day I have to serve my customers and stock beer.
“I had to plan my time well so I didn’t inconvenience my customers or my business.
“I love education but I didn’t have a chance to study when I was young as I didn’t have money back then,” she said
“But I dreamt of becoming a teacher and it haunted me until I decided to do something about it.”
Her patrons told Daily Sun that they were proud of their shebeen queen teacher.
“She’s inspired us all. Many of us are thinking of swopping beer for books.
“Look at me, I’m still young. I can still go back to school and study,” said Obed Morudu.
Gogo Tladi has been running her shebeen for many years.
“I raised my children with the money I’m making from this tavern and some are at school as a result.
“I know I’m left with only a few years to work but I’m proud that I have achieved my dreams.
“I will rest in peace knowing that I did something for myself,” she said.
She said she advises older people like her to take a chance.
“It is never too late to achieve your dreams. Don’t be discouraged by negative comments.”
