Instead of a rosy tenure in the aftermath of her victory in the Miss World Zimbabwe pageant, life has turned into a sudden nightmare for 25-year-old financial advisor Emily Kachote.
Last week, a few days after being pronounced as the country’s reining queen of beauty, she was criticised and dubbed “Ugly Miss Zimbabwe” by people on social media as they felt she did not meet the standards of beauty for the country’s representative at this year’s Miss World pageant.
However, last weeks’ social media onslaught was only the tip of the iceberg, with our sister paper, H-Metro on Monday revealing that Kachote’s now seemingly ill fated reign could be short lived amid revelations that there were nude pictures of her circulating on social media. A decision on whether Kachote will still represent the country at the pageant will be taken on Friday by the Miss Zimbabwe Trust.
The latest events follow a disturbing pattern over the years that would lead some to question whether the Miss Zimbabwe crown is cursed, as whoever walks away with the top prize at the pageant is befallen by unfortunate circumstances. The crown, it seems, is a magnet for controversy that poisons the future of its holder.
Last year’s winner of the pageant, Thabiso Phiri was stripped of her title after similar pictures of her emerged on social media platforms. Her downfall came less than a month after she had attained the crown.
Social media seems to be a minefield for the winners of the pageant as earlier this year, the winner of the 2011 edition of Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mashandu’s nude and semi-nude pictures also started circulating on the internet.
But the question that begs to be answered is: Should Zimbabwe blame its beauty queens for the nude pictures?
