THE state has enough evidence to prosecute the killers of Mozambican Emmanuel Sithole. Mthinte Bhengu, Sizwe Mngomezulu, Ayanda Sibiya and Sifundo Mzimela appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates Court yesterday in connection with Emmanuel’s death.
The four men allegedly stabbed the Mozambican street vendor after refusing to pay for a packet of cigarettes they took from him.
Three of them were arrested on Sunday while the fourth man was nabbed on Monday night.
Sithole was killed in broad daylight on Saturday. His death made international headlines after images of his knife attack were published in the Sunday Times.
National Prosecuting Authority boss Mxolisi Nxasana told reporters after the case was postponed that there was enough evidence to send the accused to jail.
Nxasana said: “We are quite confident, with the evidence we have in the docket, that we will prosecute this case successfully.” He said law enforcement agencies were working tirelessly to ensure all people living in Mzansi felt safe.
He called on communities to come forward with whatever information might help the police and the prosecutors.
Emmanuel’s aunt, Anna Sithole, said: “He was a breadwinner. He has three children and a wife. Who is going to take care of them?”
Gauteng Premier David Makhura said: “All xenophobic cases will receive priority. We have a dedicated team that will deal with them.”
The case was postponed to 4 May for a bail application. Daily Sun.
