What better time than Mother’s Day to celebrate what makes single mothers uniquely dateable. We asked blogger Jo Middleton of the award-winning Slummy Single Mummy blog to tell us her 15 reasons to date a single mum.

There are currently an estimated two million single parents in the UK, the majority headed by women, so before you strike off a potential partner just before she has children think for a minute about how drastically you’re reducing your chances of meeting that special someone. Sure, they may come with a little extra, but there are plenty of good reasons why dating a single mum makes perfect sense.
15 Reasons to Date a Single Mum
  1. She’s independent. Far from needed to be rescued or looked after, single mums are independent, determined and know what they want.
  1. She knows how to put other people first. We’re not saying she’s completely selfless in a doormat way, but she’s certainly practiced at thinking of other people too.
  1. She has great snacks. There are packed lunches to make you see. Come on, who doesn’t love a Penguin and a packet of Wotsits?
  1. You know she’s a good mum. Let’s cut to the chase here, if you want children of your own then at least this way you know she’s up to the job. On the other hand, you don’t need to worry that she’s chomping at the bit to get at your sperm.
  1. She has a ‘can do’ attitude. She has to. Someone needs to make family life happen. She’s resourceful and great at finding solutions.
  1. You get to go on fun days out. Legoland anyone?
  1. And you get to stay in some evenings. Because staying in is the new going out, but cheaper and less tiring.
  1. Single mums raise awesome children. Think Julia Roberts, Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Bill Clinton.
  1. You get to watch cartoons. And go to kids’ movies at the cinema. At last, now you don’t have to pretend you’re desperate to see the latest action thriller when what you really want to do is watch Paddington.
  1. She won’t plague you with calls. Frankly she’s far too busy, so if you want that second date you’ll have to make it worth her while.
  1. She doesn’t play games. See point 10. She’d rather be in bed with a good book than up until 3am analysing the potential dual meaning of your text messages.
  1. She’s easy to please. We’re not saying she’s a soft touch, far from it, but single mums definitely appreciate the little things like having someone else plan and cook a meal. Double points later in the relationship for booking the babysitter.
  1. She’ll look amazing for your dates. The fact that she’s often found in yoghurt smeared jeans makes the transformation even more stunning.
  1. You don’t need to worry so much about spilling or breaking things. The children have already broken all of the nice things so she has a high tolerance for clumsiness.
  1. She’s never short of wet wipes for sticky moments. You know, like exploding ketchup sachets in McDonalds…
